McPhee’s have been making kilts in New Zealand since 1946. Our kilts are hand stitched in the traditional manner and, with care, will last for generations.

Our thanks to the guys from the Campbell wedding at Staglands, Upper Hutt for permission to use their images on this product page and also for the Home page photo of the wedding party. Also, a big thank you to the photographer, Anna Munro for letting us use these fabulous, colourful images and if you would like to get in contact with her for your wedding photos, here is the link to her website; www.wellingtonphotographer.net.

McPhee’s Made to Measure 8 Yard Kilt

Fabric
All the fabric we use for kilts is imported from mills in Scotland. Tartan can be imported by the metre and as prices vary mill to mill please ask for a quote.

Our website is designed for you to be able to see all the images of the tartans available.  See all the Tartans that are available in Tartan - Fabric by Metre - Choose Option.

We suggest you start by looking at the Medium Weight (Briariach) Tartans but if the Tartan you would like is not there look through the Heavy Weight Tartans, there are a lot to choose from (621 in fact!)

Fabric Weight
10oz ( For Highland Dancing kilts and gents casual kilts)
13oz ( Standard for the traditional, 8 yard kilt and sometimes used for a casual kilt )
16oz ( Heavy weight,  ideal for pipe bands)

Process

Choose your tartan. Ask family members which tartan you might wear, ask if any other members of the family had kilts and which tartan they wore. We can email you pictures of the tartans available in your clan. If you contact us and let us know which tartan you prefer we can let you know whether it is an "old and rare" tartan or an easily available tartan.

Take measurements. Have a look at the image which shows measurement placements and if you have any queries either phone us so we can talk you through the process or email us and we will phone you back. It is vital that this step is done correctly.

Waist Measurement (1)- this is around the waist, at the navel and is a snug measurement.

Seat Measurement (2) - this is a loose measurement around the widest part of the bottom. Ensure you have nothing in your pockets.

Length measurement (3)  - this needs to be completed by another person. If you try and do this yourself you will lean over and not get a correct measurement. Measure from navel to the floor when kneeling. Kneel up straight and do not lean forward. This is the finished length.

Your Height (enables the kilt maker to visualise the finished kilt).

Please take care when you take these measurements. The kilt will be made to the measurements you supply. Any subsequent adjustment required will be at the client's cost.

Start to finish usually takes a couple of months but varies according to season and if the postal service is slower than usual.

Posted by Leith on 5th Aug 2014

We went to get fitted for kilts and accessories with Elaine and were blown away with the service we received. It was knowledgeable, experienced and easy to understand. At no point where we pressured into buying anything and our visits were not rushed! The final product looks awesome and I can’t wait to wear it at the wedding! I have recommended to others and would do again!

Great kilt, great service, great price

Posted by Mike on 1st Aug 2014

Great kilt, great service, great price. Despite the order including a clash of [heroic] Campbell and [villainous] MacDonald kilts, McPhees [or Elaine if you prefer] was great to deal with and gave expert advice. Wore the kilts home and numerous times since, each time receiving comments as to how good they look. I would highly recommend McPhees and have done so already.

    Traditional 8 yd Kilt

Posted by Jim on 11th Sep 2013

A very big thank you to Elaine and McPhees for the great service I have received once I ordered my kilt. I had a very tight timeframe to get the kilt made but before the day was over they had ordered the tartan from Scotland and it was received by McPhees in less than ten days. The kilt maker was also exceptional doing a great job in just over a week. The kilt is a perfect fit and I have received many compliments every time I have worn it. Mc Phees went out of their way to assist me in choosing the appropriate accessories that fitted the colour and clan of the tartan. Again anything that was not in stock was ordered from Scotland and speedily sent to me on arrival. I can't give too many compliments on the service and care I received from McPhees. Thanks
