McPhee’s has been in Wellington for over 65 years. It was founded in 1946 by Neil McPhee who also started the NZ Police Pipe Band. There have only been five owners in this 60 year period. Neil McPhee handed over the reins firstly to Colin Addison, then Kevin Nelson, Janet & Terry Weir and more recently to Elaine and Alan (in 2002).
Elaine is of MacNaughton descent, with family members currently residing in Antrim and also in Dublin. Her father’s family all hail from Devon.
Alan’s ancestry on his Paternal side traces back to County Donegal in Ireland (after a few generations in Glasgow) and on his Maternal side he is a Macdonald, from Dundee although the family trace back to Reay in Caithness. His family has a long history in various Scottish Regiments back to at least 1804.
Elaine and Alan have always been interested in history and their celtic heritage, Alan favouring genealogy and military history, and Elaine Economic and Social history. Alan has a B.A in History and is currently completing his Masters in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies through the University of Strathclyde and Elaine a B.C.A from Victoria University.
Having a passion for history and a strong Celtic family heritage, ownership of McPhee’s is not a job but a way of life.
